The Lightweight FERNWEG is an aerodynamicwheel, available in two different profile heights and perfectly suited for atriathlon or ironman. Through months of testing in the wind tunnel andcooperation with various aerodynamics specialists and professional triathletes,Lightweight was able to develop a new construction based on the LightweightMEILENSTEIN. The result is the Lightweight FERNWEG, a top carbon wheelset inthe combination of aerodynamics, crosswind resistance, stiffness, handling andweight. The low rolling resistance leads you more easily to your goal, increases your speed and makes you more effective. Crosswinds do not disturbthe FERNWEG and let athletes get the maximum performance out of the aeroposition. Where riders with other wheel products have to leave the aeroposition, the FERNWEG rider still lies on his handlebars and rides away fromthe competition.
Good to know
The C in our product names stands forClincher, the T for Tubular and all EVO models are Tubeless Ready.
All models with an E at the end have 24 mmwide rims and are equipped with rim brakes (Non Disc).
The advantages and disadvantages of an Aerowheel set
When it comes to aerodynamics, wheels playa decisive role, but only at high speeds from around 40 km/h. Rim height and aerodynamicsare inseparably linked. The high rim dissipates the airflow better, thusensuring less drag and you can put more speed on the road. Additionally everyracing bike with high-profile wheels looks faster and more aggressive andbecomes a real eye-catcher on the road. High profile wheels are the epitome ofa fast and beautiful aero or time trial bike.
A disadvantage of these wheels, however, isthat the height of the rim makes them more sensitive to strong crosswinds.Furthermore, the weight often increases because the wheel has a higher rim.
The high art is to find the perfect mix andbalance between handling, weight, aerodynamics and wind sensitivity. Everymanufacturer finds his own way here and implements his own standards and ideasof the perfect wheel.
Available in numerous variants
The new FERNWEG is available in the two rimheights 63 mm and 85 mm. The rim can be ordered in the non-disc version (rimbrake) as clincher or tubular version and in the disc version, as tubelessversion (FERNWEG EVO). The standard version is optionally available with awhite or red label. In addition, the FERNWEG Black ED is available with aCeramicSpeed bearing, a black hub thrust piece on the front wheel and a blacklabel.
l for tubular tyres (Lighweight FERNWEG T Tubular ), clincher tyres(Lightweight FERNWEG C Clincher) or tubeless/tubular (FERNWEG EVO)
l Rim brakes or disc brakes (EVO)
l Carbon rim with 63 mm or carbon rim with 85 mm high profile
l Front wheel rim brake 16 spokes, front wheel disc brake (EVO) 20spokes
l Rear wheel rim or disc brake 20 spokes each
l New design with red or white lightweight label
l The SchwarzED (Black Edition) offers additional - simple claritythrough understatement: spokes, rim and logos in black, greater durability andlower rolling resistance through CeramicSpeed ceramic bearings
Every Lightweight wheelset is carefullyhandmade in Germany. This can lead to slight variations in surface structureand colour. This is a characteristic quality feature of this particularlyhigh-quality production method. Lightweight stands for high-end quality Made inGermany.
Disc brakes on an aero wheel
The braking performance of disc brakes issignificantly better than the braking force over the brake flank. Disc brakes, however, cause a little more weight and losses in aerodynamics. Disc brakescause less wear and tear on the wheel itself, as the braking surface wearsindependently of the rim, therefore the high profile wheels in the disc versionare more durable. So the road cyclist has to decide what to focus on andwhether to use rim brakes or disc brakes.
The new FERNWEG convinces with its valuesand is The Aero Carbon Road Bike Wheelset
Higher, faster, further. Our newaerodynamic carbon wheel is based on the Lightweight MEILENSTEIN and shineswith the acceleration and STW values of the Lightweight MEILENSTEIN.
With the help of wind tunnel data, wetinkered with the aerodynamic advantage for the new, lightweight aero wheelfrom Lightweight. Tests were conducted with aerodynamics specialists andprofessional triathletes until the ideal shape and profile height were found. The result is a new, unique and aerodynamic high profile wheelset withabsolutely impressive performance values from the wind tunnel. The combinationof aerodynamics, crosswind resistance, stiffness, handling and weight ensure anunprecedented smoothness of your ride.
Every manufacturer has to make compromiseswhen developing an aero wheel set. With the FERNWEG, Lightweight has an aerowheel in its portfolio that convinces with its combination of weight, stiffness, air resistance and wind sensitivity and makes a balanced ridepossible.
The Lightweight FERNWEG is an aero wheelsetwith extremely high stability, a relatively low weight and an optimal weightdistribution. The FERNWEG 85 mm disc wheelset weighs just 1765 g, the 63 mmdisc set 1695 g. The 85 mm non-disc version (rim brake) weighs 1625 g in theclincher version and 1500 g as a tubular set. The 63 mm variant for rim-brakedroad bikes weighs 1560 g in the clincher version and 1435 g as a tubularversion.
The fight for every single gram can be atthe expense of stiffness. Lightweight is known for best values regardingstiffness. This also continues with the FERNWEG. At 80 Newton per millimetre(N/mm) the aerodynamic wheels are on average around 20 N/mm stiffer thancomparable aero rims. The high stiffness of Aero wheels ensures agile handlingand good acceleration.
Especially in crosswind conditions, the newdesign of the long-distance track comes into its own. Practical tests clearlyshowed that the triathlete has to leave his aerodynamic seating position later,as the wheel remains stable for a long time. This was also confirmed in thewind tunnel. Here, the FERNWEG shows a lower wind sensitivity than comparablecompetitors, even in crosswinds. This secures valuable seconds and ensures a comfortableride.
The full carbon wheels from LightweightFERNWEG at a glance
Modern aerodynamic carbon high profile rimsnot only have lower air resistance, but also possess a number of otherproperties:
l Low susceptibility of the wheelsets to cross winds and gusts
l Reduced air resistance with lateral inflow up to the gliding effect(possibility of propulsion)
l Very stiff wheelset due to new construction compared to thepredecessor, optimized carbon layer structure and laminated spokes
l Good braking behaviour and longer wheel life due to local laminatereinforcement on the brake tracks
l Very good braking performance of the DISC version, not least thanksto the innovative pentagon hub
l Better steering behaviour and improved aerodynamics compared to theprevious model
l Light weight despite high rim
l UCI-compliant (comply with the applicableUCI rules)
